Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but today I thought of this again…
And the moment your speed, effort, or fatigue causes you to feel “disconnected,” it’s time to slow down and regain your flow. Never… ever… “practice struggle.”
…Terry Laughlin, author of Total Immersion Swimming
I was swimming at the pool. I was having a horrible swim – my rhythm and pace were just completely out of whack. So, I cut my swim workout short and went home, refusing to “practice struggle”! I don’t know what’s wrong, but I’m having a really bad week.
You make a good point…?
Hmmm. I have mixed emotions on this one. When this happens to me, I tend to tell myself to stop making excuses and to push through it. That which doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. For example, I often “allow” myself to walk too much when I run. Sure – why run and “practice struggle”, but isn’t that what training is for? To get through the struggle, and overcome the mental barriers that keep us from improving?
Maybe THAT is what I should post about in my blog, since I’ve been neglecting it for a while.
Anyway, hang in there. You’ll get it all figured out soon enough.
Rebecca – Thanks for the support!
I really admire you for being able to step back and call it a day when your body is sending those types of signals. Hope your week gets better.
