In Search of Free Speed, Part 2

In an attempt to gain more free speed, I took a bunch of crap off my bike. I have to pack now for my race, so no time to talk…wish me luck!

  • Working purely from memory here, I recall a low-speed wind tunnel study which concluded holding a pencil with its long axis vertical added 20 seconds to a 40k TT (vs. pointing the sharp end into the wind).

    That's why it's so important to train yourself to be comfortable in the deep aero tuck. (Paula Newby-Fraser talks about this.) If you aren't, you're moving about constantly, and trashing your aerodynamics. Better a higher position, especially if your wattage is higher in it and you're able to run better off it!
