Stacey Richardson’s Weekly Workout Tip:
This past weekend here in NC we had some crazy wind and rain. And as I looked through athlete workouts logged for Saturday, I saw all kinds of comments:
“too windy, rode inside”
“windy and rainy, I really suffered”
“pace was slow, it was windy, blegh”
“too windy, ran inside”
And then I read this athlete’s skype entry.
“I love to run in the wind and rain! Who will come with me!?”
I find it almost hard to believe that an athlete could be so positive about training in such conditions. And perhaps, the athlete, too has some doubts even after making a statement like that. But suppose, just suppose that the old adage is true ” You are what you believe yourself to be.” Suppose that you start with a positive affirmation and will yourself the rest of the way until you really believe it. Seems implauseable but wouldn’t you rather start there than working forward from “I am a failure ?”
Training the mind of a champion is way harder than training the body of one. Being a champion in your mind takes way more work than 5% body fat, a wicked- fast bike split, or looking cute at the finish line.
What is the next step for you to make your champion mind into a fortress, a bastion of self-support and confidence in 2012?
I’ll give my answers at the Duke North Carolina Multisport Expo on March 10th. Bring yours.
