I have a confession to make. I like fruitcake. Feels better to get that off my chest.
My mother used to bake it fresh when I was growing up. It was very moist, fruity and sweet, but not too sweet. The average grocery store variety of fruitcake is dry and sickeningly sweet – blech. I thought that was the reason most people don’t like fruitcake. So, last Thanksgiving, I bought some good quality fruitcake from a Southern Season and brought it to the big family gathering, expecting everybody to gobble it up.
Bakermaid Fruitcake:
Nope, I was the only one who ate a piece. I brought the rest home and stuck it in my refrigerator. The great thing about this brand is that each slice is individually wrapped. So, whenever I went on a long bike ride, I’d stick one in my pocket. It made a great snack – was easy to unwrap, easy to chew and swallow while riding, and it TASTED YUMMY!
I ate the last piece yesterday on my long ride. I think I’ll become that annoying relative who always brings fruitcake to holiday gatherings. That way I can enjoy it on my winter bike rides. hehehe.
PS: I wouldn’t use fruitcake for race-day nutrition, because Gu is way better in terms of predictable energy.
Wardrobe Report:
Rode between 12:30 and 3:00 pm, yesterday, and it was mostly sunny and 50 degrees, 18% humidity, 8mph winds. When I walked out the door, it felt way colder. I don’t know why. So, I bundled up more than I would have for 50 degrees, and was glad I did. I was a tad bit on the warm side, which is better than being freezing cold in my book. My toes were very cold at the end of the ride.
Here’s what I was wearing:
Tri shorts with running tights over them.
Race socks (from the Carrboro 4th of July run)
fleece headband under my helmet
arm warmers (love those things)
running shirt (was a brick workout)
bike jersey
newspaper stuffed into my bike jersey. (can be easily discarded, but never did)
fingerless bike gloves (don’t usually bother with my tri bike)
I never peeled any layers off. I thought I’d have to.
