Playing around with Picasa Web Albums

[salbumthumbs=pub_date desc,3,y,n,center]

I’m planning to take alot of photos during my Rev 3 Tri trip. It’s kind of a pain to upload photos to my blog, so I looked at some options to get photo albums into my blog more easily. I love Picasa (a Google site)! I even downloaded the Windows App which organized all the pictures on my laptop. It also lets you upload photos to Picasa – and automatically resizes them for web/blog use before uploading, so the uploads are really fast! Once uploaded, you can rotate, organize, etc. It gives you some embed code to put a nifty slideshow into your blog. I’m guessing it will be easy to put the albums into Facebook, too. Very cool.

Anyway, here is a sample slideshow. It’s from my trip to the Outer Banks last summer.

Update: I went strawberry picking today with my daughter and took some pictures. It took me about three minutes to use Picasa’s Windows app to grab the photos off my SD Card, file them on my comptuer, delete them from the SD card, upload them to the web, and embed them here. And they are also automatically put on Facebook, too, under a Picasa tab in my profile. Google Rocks!

  • Carol, thank you SO much for your help! I would have never been able to figure that out on my own! You helped me out SO much!!
    Thanks,
    Tia

  • Tia,

    The slideshow is created automatically by the Picasa web site. Here are the steps...

    From within the Picasa 3 program on your computer, select the photos you want to upload to the web. Then click the upload icon at the bottom of the screen. Make sure you select Public as the type of album. At least for a blog, they have to be public. Also, give the pictures an album name. That way you will be able to make a slideshow out of the album. I also select "small...for blogs" as the size option. You can pick whatever size option you like best. Click the "Upload" button once you have all the settings done.

    Once the upload process is done, click the "View Online" button. That opens a web browser and lets you see the album. Make sure you are logged into your Google Picasa account at this point. Make sure you are also in the View All mode, where you see all the pictures in the one album, not just one picture! Then you will see some "Share" options. Under the "Share" button on the right side of the screen, you will see a "Link to this album" option. Click that. Then you will see some text boxes. Under those, look for the "Embed Slideshow" option. That pops open the slideshow, and gives you some code to copy and paste into your blog.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi. I read your blog regularly, and enjoy your posts! I love what you've done with the picasa "slide show". I have Picasa 3 on my computer, and have done collages on that program, but not a slide show. I know it's asking a lot, but could you give me step-by-step instructions on how you made it, then posted it on your blog? You made it sound so simple, but I can't seem to get it to work on mine! Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • A reader emailed me this message about Picasa, fyi.

    This is just a heads-up on Picassa - Google has complete control over your pics once you post there. See the following links:

  • I found your blog a while back as a suggested blog on Google Reader and have been following your tips/advice for a couple months now. I'm jealous of your warmer climate and ability to do open water swims! I'm still working on fully configuring/customizing my blog (thank for the theme idea), but I did find a Picasa Web Albums solution that worked for me. While I link the slide shows Google offers, I wanted something that would update automatically. I found the altPWA WordPress plugin (http://www.cnet.ro/wordpress/altpwa/) which allows me to create a full page in my blog to pictures from all my events. Feel free to check out the Gallery page at my blog to see what it looks like. If you are interested in this sort of setup, just let me know and i can send you more details if you want.

    Good luck at Rev3!
