Is there such a thing as post Ironman “I don’t give a damn”? If so, then I have it. Big time.
My bike pace totally sucks lately, despite that I have kept up a half way decent base. I’ve been getting 15mph pace on my road bike, and 16mph on my tri bike. In my peak training, I was getting 17mph or more. I don’t give a damn.
My run pace totally sucks lately. I did a 5 mile tempo run the other day. I was working my ass off, and my pace was 10:02. I don’t give a damn.
I have gained at least 5 pounds, maybe more. I have not had the balls to weigh myself since my Ironman. Most of my jeans and dress slacks still fit, but my “skinny jeans” are very very tight with some major muffin top. I don’t give a damn.
I’ve only swum 5 times since my Ironman. My swim pace per 100 yards is about 2 minutes. In my peak, I can do 100 meters in that same time. I don’t give a damn.
I figure this “I don’t give a damn attitude” is normal. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad I did the Ironman. After tackling that challenge, I feel like I can conquer anything that comes my way in life. It’s all good. And – I don’t give a damn. (That one was just a joke!)
Here are two pics that I tweeted on my bike ride today. I only stopped one time to pee, and take these two pictures. I was trying to stay very focused and not waste time stopping, hoping that my pace would be better than last week’s 15mph. It wasn’t . I had a great ride, tho. 🙂 Click images to enlarge.

Wow - good to hear it's not just me. I stayed strong in December but my January has sucked. I am starting my training plan for the year on 2/1/10. Totally identify with everything you said. Put on a couple of pounds, not a lot of motivation, and times seem slow....
You had a very rewarding and long season. Your body is just recovering, once the season rolls around, you will get excited again and you will go great.
Too cold to take anything seriously right now. I am racing a Half Marathon in two weeks. Yikes! I need to work hard this week if I want to nail my pace. Just so hard to go out in the cold every day.
Perfectly normal! Hey... I'm cleared to run and swim, but I don't feel like it!! I don't give a damn either!! Haha!!
I have it, too, Carol...and I haven't come close to an IM yet. ; ) I'm blaming it on the weather. We had two gorgeous days last week and I felt like my old self. The weather turned back to cold/rainy/GA winter stuff and my inner athlete went back into hibernation. Thankfully, Spring is right around the corner!
Yup, it´s - 22 C here and I`m in a related state of mind:

And I should start the four month training cycle for the 1/2 Ironman on monday..
Don't ever take winter bike pace seriously. Once you throw in all the layers of clothes, the road bike vs tri bike, no serious goal in sight...you go from 22ish mph for 112 to 16.5 for 30. And it feels the exact same.
I am glad that it is not just me! I have one more week before I need to start getting more serious about the 2010 season, my first HIM is just over 3 months away!
