I went out for a bike/run brick this morning. We are having a terrible heat wave here, so I set my alarm at 5am, hoping to beat the heat. I hit the snooze button, and didn’t get up until 6:30am. By the time I ate and got all my gear ready, it was 7:15am. It was already feeling hot out. Breathing the muggy air while riding my bike was stifling, and I struggled keeping up a good pace for the first half of my 30 mile ride.
The second half of my ride, I was feeling better. I drank both my water bottles – all 64 ounces of it. I got back home at about 10am and headed out for a 6 mile run. My plan called for a 5 minute warmup, then 6 miles of 4 minute cruise intervals with a 1 minute jog between. After getting up the hill, I started the first interval. I felt okay at this point and was able to make my pace. I kept up this workout for 3 miles. At that point, I was very hot and wanted to stop and rest longer than the 1 minute I was allowed.
I decided to dig in deeper and started running again. About 20 seconds into it, I decided I was just being stupid trying to continue a hard run in this kind of heat when I was feeling so very hot. I looked at my watch, and it said 10:30am. Definitely too late and too hot to continue running. I backtracked to the little lake nearby and jumped in to cool off. It took me 20 full minutes to feel okay again.
After my cool off in the lake, I thought I’d jog home at a slow pace. I was able to jog for a 1/2 mile, then got hot again, so just walked the rest of the way home. Even walking felt awful. Ugh! I can’t imagine doing a race in this heat! Right now, it’s 100°F, and feels like 105°F!
