Triathlon Flying Mounts

Did a video blog of doing Flying Mounts.

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTRPerg3BOU]

The main point would be to practice, practice, practice!  Other points:

  • practice first in a grassy area, with a slight downhill.     That way if you wipe out, it won’t hurt so bad!
  • try to land on your inner thigh, not your butt!  (ouch)
  • if using Pam spray for wetsuit lube, don’t get it on your thigh!  Keep it below the knees, or else you might slip off the saddle during the mount.
  • Might be worth practicing with wet shorts, as that will make your leg more slippery, too!
  • Probably should practice with your bike shoes after you’ve gotten the hang of it.  Especially dismounting is a little tricky getting clipped out.
  • don’t use flying mounts unless there is plenty of flat section after the mount line in order to get clipped in.    I did this once in a race where there was an immediate steep uphill after the mount line, and I could not get clipped in before hitting that hill!
  • Oh, note that I do not clip my shoes into my bike.  I tried this once, and just am not coordinated. So, in races, I put my shoes on in T1, and run with my bike to the Mount line.  Hard on the cleats, yes!

  • I'm not sure if they have any races in your area, but you should look at some cyclocross races this fall. With just two races last year, I got totally comfortable with running mounts/dismounts.

I guess running through the mud and dodging trees, roots and a few dozen other riders sharing the same trail will force you to learn really quick!

Plus, they are TONS of fun! Great off season training.

  • I was impressed how easy you made it look. I would love to give it a try, but I raised my seat on my bike to reduce the bend at my knee due to arthitis at the knee cap.
