The guidance counselor at the high school recommended that I take a yoga class with my teenage daughter as a way to reconnect with her. Yes, the teenage saga continues…sigh.

So, we went to a 90 minute Hatha yoga class at The Triangle Yoga Center in Chapel Hill. The instructor’s name was Kristen, and there was only one other student besides my daughter and me. I was glad for that, as that meant less people to see me make a fool of myself. Also, we got lots of personal attention.

The class began with ten minutes of something called Savasana, also known as Corpse Pose. I would describe it as a state of complete relaxation and balance. Basically I could sleep like this.

We did alot of other poses… Kristen explained them in detail as we went along, and sometimes walked around and corrected our body positions. Lots of good posture, body balance and stretching. I can especially use the stretching, as I did some 90 second accelerations the other day which got my hammies all tight again. The only difficult pose for me was The Triangle Pose, which really hurt my inner thighs. I guess that muscle is all tight, too, whatever it is!

Here’s an image showing the Surya-Namaskar, or Sun salutation. We went through that series of poses several times slowly so Kristen could explain it to us, then we did it again ‘fast’…well, I can’t say fast because nothing in Yoga is fast, but at a pace that matched our breathing.

My daughter really enjoyed the class, too. It was a great way for both of us to relieve some stress in our bodies and our lives. The class ended with the Savasana again. This time Kristen went around and corrected everyone’s position. She re-adjusted my legs, feet and shoulders. When she did my shoulders, it felt soooo good that I wished that she could come and tuck me in bed at every night!
